Space technology: climate friend or foe?

Helen Czerski and Tom Heap look into space technology: are the carbon costs of space launches worth it for the environmental benefits of being able to monitor the planet from afar?

Last month saw the first ever private space walk. Meanwhile more and more satellites are being put up into space all the time, and the emissions from space launches are huge. In this programme, Helen Czerski and Tom Heap ask what impact the never-ending march of space technology is having on the environment. Could exploration missions ever be carbon neutral? On the other hand, space-based observation lets us monitor the planet in ways we never could before, with satellites now being used to keep people accountable, from monitoring methane to spotting illegal fishing vessels.
