Episode 3

Barra Best looks at how biodiversity can be safeguarded. This episode features wild goats in Ireland, ptarmigan in Slovenia, dormice in Germany, badgers in the Netherlands and harriers in Spain.

Wildfires are a growing problem across Europe, but in Ireland, the wild goat is part of the solution. In Slovenia, the ptarmigan is at risk from walkers in the national park, but the solution is to educate people to stay on the paths. The German dormouse has been in decline, but a new survey by citizen scientists is helping shed light on this elusive creature.

In the Netherlands, badgers have also been coming into conflict with humans, but new efforts are being made to give them the chance to live safely. In Spain, the Montagu’s harrier is a bird of prey that is at risk from farm machinery, but a new initiative to help farmers is giving it a safe haven. And in Switzerland, two former wildlife TV presenters are spearheading changes to urban planning to allow the soil to breathe and floodwaters to be reduced.
