Who will rule the pool in the four swimming finals on the first night of the games? Clare Balding introduces the action, which also features Britain’s Olympic champion Adam Peaty.

Peaty continues his defence of the 100m breaststroke title in this evening’s semi-finals, but the highlight of the session promises to be the final of the women’s 400m freestyle, with reigning champion Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh combining to own the 28 fastest times in history prior to the Olympics.

Elsewhere, there’s the men’s artistic gymnastics qualification and the climax to the men’s rugby sevens as the medal matches take place at the Stade de France. Fiji won gold at the previous two Olympics, but host nation France have enjoyed their best season in this format of the game, inspired by the presence of former World Rugby Player of the Year Antoine Dupont.
