Nikki Bedi travels to Mardin in the south east of Turkey to immerse herself in the arts and culture of the region. The area is well known for its historic old town and unique landscape but is fast becoming a central player in Turkey's arts scene.

In 2024, Mardin is playing host to its sixth biennial, and Nikki will discover this festival through the eyes of local and international artists. Influential figures in the art world, like Ahmet Ogut, Gunes Terkol and Ayse Erkman, are showing exhibitions at the biennial and discussing the role that creative endeavour plays in their lives. Nikki meets the local artists seeking to embrace the local landscape and use the area for inspiration. And she visits local sculptor Nurettin Cakmak and glasswork artist Tacettin Ebu Barak to find out how the mythical Turkish figure of the Shahmaran plays into their work.
