On this first episode Jeff Goldblum explores the connections between jazz and rock music. Looking at the links between jazz to rock via the blues and how the introduction of amplification to performance created brand new sounds in the 1960’s with jazz at its heart. Some of the biggest names in rock including Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and Elton John talk of their passion for jazz and how it influenced their music and we hear how jazz shaped the musical journeys of David Bowie, Patti Smith, Chrissie Hynde, Sting, Robert Plant, Bryan Ferry and Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Jazz musicians Shabaka Hutchings & Martin Taylor highlight the groundbreaking work of Jimi Hendrix whose talent defies any genre but is recognised and highly rated by the jazz world. Plus contributions and insights from broadcasters Tina Edwards and Kevin Le Gendre.
