The Mermaid’s Gift

Fred and Pete discover a mermaid’s mirror and learn all about Cornwall’s mermaid legends. They even get to meet a ‘real’ mermaid after attracting her with their singing.

As Fred and Pete try to pluck up the courage to paddle into the sea, Pete discovers an object covered in sand and shells. But what is it? They head to the Museum of Cornish Treasures to see if Suzy and Archie can help. Here, Fred and Pete find out their treasure is a special mirror connected to a magical legend of the sea. But who would need a mirror in the sea? Suzy knows of a Cornish legend that might provide an answer and sends Fred and Pete off to a church in the village of Zennor. There, they meet Elizabeth, the vicar, and find a carving of a mermaid holding a mirror just like theirs. Elizabeth tells them that mermaids are said to use mirrors when brushing their long hair, and that Cornwall has many mermaid legends.

Fred and Pete decide that maybe the mirror belongs to the Zennor mermaid and want to return it. But how do you meet a mermaid? Suzy buzzes on the Treasure Comm and tells Fred and Pete that, according to the legend, the Zennor mermaid loved the sound of singing. Fred and Pete head to the beach and try every kind of singing they can think of in an effort to attract a mermaid, but they have no success. Just when they're about to give up ever meeting a mermaid, a voice reminds them that they can still play make-believe. The voice belongs to Mischief, a mermaid expert who likes to dress as one! The mirror belongs to her, but she says Fred and Pete should keep it.
