Daniel Ellsberg

Daniel Ellsberg was once described by the US government as the most dangerous man in America. He was the Defense Department contractor who leaked the classified documents about the Vietnam War known as the Pentagon Papers. They were seven thousand pages long and revealed a history of deception about the war by successive governments.

Glenda Jackson

Actor and former Labour MP Glenda Jackson who has died aged 87. She won two Oscars and made many acclaimed performances on stage and screen, before moving into politics.

Born: 9 May 1936, died: 15 June 2023. Aged 87

Melanie Philips

Melanie Phillips helped to transform the treatment of black and Asian children by social workers. After a number of high profile tragedies in which children were killed while under the supervision of social services, Melanie set about creating new policies and training systems.

Died aged 64

Sir Ben Helfgott

A holocaust survivor and Olympic weightlifter who represented Great Britain at two games. After retiring he devoted himself to community activities and ensuring that those who died in the holocaust should never be forgotten. 

Born 22 November 1929, died 16th June 2023. Aged 93
