Welcome to Southwell Minster

Welcome to our Cathedral Eucharist on Easter Day. This is always the most special Sunday of the year, as we celebrate the new life won for us by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This year it is extra special for us as we are delighted to be sharing it with viewers around the country via this live broadcast on 鲍鱼tv One. Whether you are joining us in the building or at home, we hope that our worship brings you close to the risen Messiah, and that the joy of Easter will remain with you throughout this Eastertide, and beyond.

For more than 900 years Southwell Minster has been opening its doors to welcome visitors, pilgrims and worshippers. Construction of the present Minster, on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church, was begun in 1108, authorised by Archbishop Thomas of York to be a kind of 鈥榮ub鈥� cathedral for York Minster (along with with Beverley and Ripon). In 1884 the Minster became the Cathedral Church of the newly created diocese of Southwell. Of particular note is the Chapter House, dating from the 13th century, which are home to the renowned 鈥淟eaves of Southwell鈥�. These magnificent and delicate stone carvings of foliage are regarded as some of the finest examples of medieval craftmanship existing today. Earlier this year, in a poll organised by the Association of English Cathedrals, The Leaves of Southwell were voted as the nation鈥檚 number one Cathedral Treasure!

Then Peter began to speak to them: 鈥業 truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ鈥攈e is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, 鈥楾hey have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.鈥� Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus鈥� head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. God of Life,

who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son

to the death of the cross,

and by his glorious resurrection

have delivered us from the power of our enemy:

grant us so to die daily to sin,

that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life;听
