Hannah French presents the first of four Lunchtime Concerts recorded last month at LSO St Luke's, as part of the Basically Beethoven series. Today's concert is given by the remarkable young tenor Ilker Arcay眉rek with pianist, and song specialist Simon Lepper. Each concert puts the music of Beethoven at its core, and today's begins with Beethoven's only song-cycle: An die ferne Geliebte - To the distant beloved - an emotional cycle of six songs, about the pains of unrequited love.
There're more songs by Beethoven following this, before Ilker Arcay眉rek and Simon Lepper end their recital with three songs by Felix Mendelssohn framing one by Reynaldo Hahn, the beautiful La barcheta.
