Episode 8 of 40

The team take a trip back in time as they revive a 1960s lawnmower, a huge Welsh rugby union trophy and a leather belt bought for a sixteenth birthday and loved for a lifetime.

The experts take a trip back in time as they rejuvenate three precious family heirlooms.

First is a lawnmower now owned by James but originally by his beloved grandfather. The petrol-powered lawnmower was used by James and his brother on their weekly childhood visits to see their grandpa. The two lads would compete to see who could mow his lawn the quickest, before the whole family played cricket on the freshly cut grass. However, the high speeds and risky manoeuvres left dents and scratches on the mower’s smart racing-green livery, and the following years of laying idle in a shed have meant the rust has set in and it no longer starts. James thinks now might be the perfect time to put his own son to work, cutting his grass with his great-grandpa’s old mower. Lover of vintage machines Dominic Chinea gets stuck in, reconditioning the engine, bashing out dents and reinstating the dark green paint to get the lawnmower fired up once again.

Here to meet Brenton West is Lyn from Barry. As secretary of the Welsh Schools Rugby Union Intermediate Group, he is the custodian of their prestigious trophy and transports it each season to the final game. The large mahogany shield is adorned with nearly 100 small silver plaques detailing the name of each season’s champions, dating back to 1904. This important piece of Welsh rugby history is in dire need of expert attention. A large crack has appeared in the wooden shield, and several silver pieces of the main decorative centre panel have gone missing. The barn’s new expert, Lou Bainbridge, tackles the enormous piece of cracked mahogany while Brenton removes and silver-plates each mini plaque, also recreating the missing details on the main panel.

Finally, Deborah has travelled to the barn with a personalised leather belt that has held up her jeans for over 40 years! It was a gift from her parents on her sixteenth birthday, bought from a stall at one of the many equestrian events she attended with them, back when she was a pony-mad teenager. She would really like fellow horse fan Suzie Fletcher to mend its splitting, dry leather and refresh the colour so that she can start wearing it again.
