LSO St Luke's Artist Focus: Annelien Van Wauwe

Clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe is joined by cellist Louis Rodde and pianist Paloma Kouider to play clarinet trios by Beethoven and Brahms. Presented by Hannah French.

Hannah French continues her week of Lunchtime Concerts from LSO St Luke's, shining the spotlight on international wind and brass players. Today, the light shines on international soloist the Belgian clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe, who is joined by cellist Louis Rodde and pianist Paloma Kouider to play clarinet trios by Beethoven and Brahms.

Both trios we'll hear today were written for a specific clarinettist. They begin with Beethoven, writing his for Joseph Bair, who suggested the idea of a variation finale based on one of the hugely popular street tunes of Vienna, hence it became known as the 'Gassenhauer', or street song.

Like Beethoven, Brahms wrote his lushly lyrical trio for a particular performer, and in Brahms's case it was Richard Muhlfeld. One of Brahms's friends wrote that it was as if 'the instruments were in love with each other.'
