An Litir Bheag 893
DhâfhĂ g sinn Iain agus am bodach, a bha ann an riochd eich, air taobh thall caolais bhon chaisteal phrĂ ise. Fhuair Iain slat. âBuail an t-slat orm,â thuirt am bodach, âagus bidh mi nam long. Bheir mi don chaisteal thu. Ăighidh aâ bhaintighearna, âCĂČ Ă s a thĂ inig thu?â Freagraidh thusa gun tĂ inig thu Ă s na h-Innsean.â Agus mhĂŹnich am bodach mar a bhiodh an cĂČrr dhen chĂČmhradh.
ÊŒS ann mar sin a thachair e. Thuirt Iain gun tĂ inig e Ă s na h-Innsean. âDĂš an luchd a tha agad air bĂČrd?â dhâfhaighnich aâ bhaintighearna.
âTha sĂŹoda,â fhreagair Iain.
âThoir ultach dheth a-steach,â ars ise.
âNach tig sibh a-mach don t-soitheach airson fhaicinn,â thuirt Iain. ThĂ inig aâ bhaintighearna a-mach.
Nuair a bha i air bĂČrd, ghluais an soitheach gu socair. Bha aâ bhaintighearna a-nise pĂŹos air falbh bhon chaisteal. Bha i feargach. Thilg i iuchraichean aâ chaisteil dhan loch. âCha tĂšid duine eile a-steach,â thuirt i.
Chaidh iad gu lĂčchairt an RĂŹgh. Thuirt aâ bhaintighearna nach pĂČsadh i an RĂŹgh gus am biodh an caisteal prĂ ise aig ceann na lĂčchairt. Thuirt an RĂŹgh ri Iain gu feumadh esan sin a dhĂšanamh. No bhiodh e air a chrochadh. Chaidh Iain agus am bodach gu uamh nam famhairean. Thog na famhairean an caisteal prĂ ise. Chuir iad aig ceann na lĂčchairt e.
Ach cha robh aâ bhaintighearna riaraichte. âCha phĂČs mi thu,â thuirt i ris an RĂŹgh, âgus am faigh mi na h-iuchraichean agam air ais.â Chaidh Iain don trĂ igh far an robh an t-iasg. Lorg an t-iasg na h-iuchraichean.Â
Cha robh aâ bhaintighearna sĂ saichte, ge-tĂ . âCha phĂČs mi thu,â thuirt i ris an RĂŹgh, âgus am faigh mi trĂŹ botail de dhâuisge Ă Tobar nam Buadh.âÂ
Dhâfhalbh Iain agus am bodach. âFaigh clach,â thuirt am bodach ris, âagus buail mi am bun na cluaise. Bidh mi marbh. Sgolt mo bhrĂč. Thig cĂČig fithich. Beir air dithis dhiubh. Can ris na trĂŹ eile nach leig thu am brĂ ithrean mu sgaoil gus an toir iad dhut cĂČig botail de dhâuisge Ă Tobar nam Buadh.â Thachair e dĂŹreach mar a mhĂŹnich am bodach. Agus bheir mi an sgeul gu crĂŹch anns an ath Litir.

The Little Letter 893
We left Iain and the old man, who was in the form of a horse, on the far side of a strait from a brazen castle. Iain got a rod. âHit me with a rod,â said the old man, âand Iâll become a ship. Iâll take you to the castle. The lady will shout, âWhere did you come from?â Youâll reply that you came from the Indies.â And the old man explained how the rest of the conversation would go.
Thatâs how it happened. Iain said that he came from the Indies. âWhat load do you have on board?â asked the lady.
âSilk,â replied Iain.
âBring a large armful of it in [to me],â said she.
âWonât you come to the ship to see it,â said Iain. The lady came out.
When she was aboard, the vessel moved gently. The lady was now a distance away from the castle. She was angry. She threw the keys of the castle into the loch. âNobody else will get entry,â she said.
They went to the Kingâs palace. The lady said she would not marry the King until the brazen castle was at the end of the palace. The King said to Iain that he would have to do that. Or he would be hanged. Iain and the old man went to the giantsâ cave. The giants lifted the brazen castle. They put it at the end of the palace.
But the lady was not satisfied. âI wonât marry you,â she said to the King, âuntil I get my keys back.â Iain went to the beach where the fish was. The fish found the keys.
The lady was not satisfied, however. âI wonât marry you,â she said to the King, âuntil I get three bottles of water from the well of the virtues.â
Iain and the old man left. âGet a stone,â said the old man to him, âand hit me at the base of the ear. Iâll be dead. Slit my belly. Five ravens will come. Catch two of them. Tell the three others that you wonât release their brothers until they give you five bottles of water from âthe well of the virtuesâ.â It happened just as the old man explained. And Iâll conclude the story in the next Litir.
