Episode 1 of 16

Yvonne and Julian celebrate International Children’s Book Day and National Pet Month. They also meet deaf people from Ukraine and Russia to find out more about the war in Ukraine.

To celebrate International Children’s Book Day, which falls on 2 April each year, Becky Bailey meets Dr Kate Rowley to find out the benefits of reading with children from a young age and why deaf children are falling behind despite deafness not being a learning disability. We are invited to watch Raymond Antrobus read to children at Blanche Nevile School. Raymond’s deafness was diagnosed at the age of six; he has a deaf protagonist in his first picture book after struggling to find deaf protagonists in children’s literature. We also meet Lucy Rogers, a children’s book illustrator and aspiring author. Lucy is an advocate for representation and has given hearing aids or cochlear implants to her characters for young deaf readers.

Yvonne and Julian meet Neus Gil CortĂ©s and Chris Fonseca to discuss their latest collaboration for ±«Óătv Taster, NOISE, which is an immersive dance film that explores our relationship to noise with vibrating soundscapes and sound reactive visuals.

With National Pet Month running from 1 April until 2 May, we take the chance to meet some of our viewers’ pets and learn the importance of taking the best possible care of them.

Also, Yvonne and Julian share the facts about the war in Ukraine before meeting Laura Kalashnik-Sapega, who is from Ukraine, and her husband Igor Sapega, who is from Russia. Both live in the UK, and they share the experiences of their friends and family back home.
