Religion and Ukraine, Scotland's census and our family stories.

As the war in Ukraine intensifies, religious leaders across Europe are continuing to call for the Russian Orthodox Church to do more to condemn the invasion of Ukraine. Reverend Dr. Andreas Andreopoulos of the European Council of Religious Leaders shares his thoughts on the role of religion and the Church in this crisis.

There’s another tale from our 100 Years of Scottish Stories. This time it’s Catriona Smyth, who shares her mother’s experience of having her first choice of career cut short in the early 1950s when women’s rights were not where they are now.

Psychotherapist Julia Samuel discusses her new book Every Family Has A Story, which reveals just how deeply we are influenced by our families and the long term effects of intergenerational trauma.

Julia Samuel and University of Edinburgh’s Mona Siddiqui review Andrea Arnold’s first work of non-fiction, COW, which is up for Best Documentary at the Baftas. They explore our relationship with animals and why we judge some animals differently from others.

The 20th March marks Census Day - the day when we are all encouraged to fill out the once-a-decade survey that asks fundamental questions about our sex, health, employment status, religious affiliation and more. Mona Siddiqui, Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the University of Edinburgh’s New College, and Sir John Curtice, Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde, examine what the Census can tell us about the society we live in and who we are today.

And marking the Census, a new exhibition has opened at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, called Counted: Scotland’s Census 2022, aiming to explore and celebrate who is living in Scotland today. Scottish-American writer Lynda-Marie Taurasi takes a walk-around the exhibition with Nasim Azad, and curator Louise Pearson joins Connie to discuss the thinking behind the portraits.

Jerusalem is a city that’s sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike - but how much do we know about the people living there now? Matthew Teller tells Connie about this most complex and contested of cities; the subject of his latest book, Nine Quarters of Jerusalem: A New Biography of an Old City.
