Mark and Ruth travel to the west of Scotland to explore Northern Ireland’s connections to Dumfries and Galloway.

The Ulster-Scots magazine series returns with Mark Thompson and Ruth Sanderson travelling to the west coast of Scotland to explore Northern Ireland’s connections to Dumfries and Galloway.

In the coastal town of Portpatrick, Mark catches up with the local harbour master who grew up across the Narrow Sea in the County Down town of Donaghadee. Meanwhile, across the Mull of Galloway in Stranraer, Ruth meets a Presbyterian minister who is the latest in a long line of church leaders from Ulster to lead congregations in the town.

In Wigtown, Mark explores the traumatic tale of the Two Martyrs, Presbyterian women killed for refusing to swear an oath to the king as head of the church in Scotland.

Ruth heads east to the picturesque Ellisland Farm, the one-time home of Robbie Burns, where she meets the contemporary Scots language poet Stuart A Paterson. And in the musical village of Moniaive, Mark discovers the story behind a popular bluegrass festival that attracts visitors from across the world.
