Wee Forests, Beavers and Woodland Skills

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith with stories from the great outdoors.

Mark meets Dr Josie Geris, a senior lecturer in hydrology at Aberdeen University who has been researching the impact that beavers might have on improving the water quality of our rivers and limiting the effects of drought. She explains more.

After last Saturday’s programme, Euan had to batten down the hatches as Storm Malik battered North East Scotland. He describes his experience.

The Scottish Woodland Skills Centre near Alyth runs a range of courses covering a wide range of topics relating to woodlands, trees and traditional wood crafts. Mark went for a visit to find out more.

A Wee Forest is a tennis court-sized, densely planted and fast growing, native species rich woodland in urban Scotland. NatureScot are working with various partners at different sites across the country to make the project come to life. Earlier this week Mark visited one of the sites in Dundee where the Dundee University Botanic Garden are working with a local primary school and health centre to bring the space to life.

Euan recalls the mysterious story of the telling stane.

Our Scotland Outdoors podcast this week features mountain bikers Andy and Aneela McKenna. We hear an excerpt where they tell Mark about how important outdoor activity is for our mental wellbeing.

Euan has another mystery bird for us. This week’s casts a rather majestic shadow.
