As well as regular red squirrels, Colin spots signs of an even more elusive mammal. The native plants in his meadow begins to take hold, attracting a new host of visitors as clouds of insects move in.

Colin meets John Ross MacMathúna, a young farmer who is welcoming nature onto his land. He planted his land with native oak trees and it is now a home for long-eared owls, red squirrels and pine martens, all sharing it with the family suckler herd.

As Colin’s second year draws to a close, he reflects on the urgent need for everyone to make space for nature. With our natural world being pushed closer and closer to the brink, every single patch counts, big or small. And in a world of overwhelming news and a sense of helplessness, a project like this can offer hope.
