The Andy Cole Fund and Kidney Research UK exist to help people like him who are living with kidney disease. Having treatment for kidney failure is gruelling, but a life-saving transplant is not a cure. The Andy Cole Fund will enable vital research to improve transplants and find better ways to support kidney patients’ mental health and wellbeing.

When his kidneys failed, Andy Cole went from elite sportsperson to kidney patient needing a transplant to survive. Andy worries about his endless medication and how Covid-19 and lockdowns have taken a toll on his mental health. “Every morning, I wake up and worry my kidney might fail.”

Our scientists are already making more organs good enough for transplant by treating kidneys with stem cells to revive and recondition them before the operation. But transplants often don’t last for life and living with kidney disease is tough.
