Live at St David's Hall, Cardiff, the Carducci Quartet play Haydn's Sunrise quartet, the fourth of his glorious op 76 set. Clare Hammond joins for Schumann's piano quintet.

Live at St. David's Hall, continuing a week-long focus on music-making in Cardiff, the Carducci Quartet perform Haydn's Sunrise quartet, so called for its evocative opening theme. The fourth of Haydn's opus 76 set of quartets was written in 1797 when the composer was in his mid sixties, and still very much at the height of his creative powers. On hearing it, Haydn's contemporary, Charles Burney felt moved to enthuse over its "..invention, fire, good taste and new effects". Pianist Clare Hammond then joins the group for a performance of Schumann's glorious and original piano quintet, a work which the composer's concert pianist wife, Clara, held in such high regard she performed it more often than any of her husbands other works for chamber group.
