11/03/21 Sustainable Farming Initiative, sustainable beef

We discuss a new scheme to pay English farmers for sustainable farming.

The Farming Minister, Victoria Prentis, unveils the details of one of the ‘public money for public goods’ schemes which are being phased in in England as direct subsidy payments are phased out. The Sustainable Farming Initiative will pay farmers for extra things they do to improve the environment, from improving soils to flood prevention.
Richard Benwell from Wildlife and Conservation link is concerned that the scheme could reward farmers for 'business as usual', and Tom Bradshaw from the National Farmers union says the detail in the plan isn’t detailed enough.
A new report from Meat Promotion Wales says it's not the amount of red meat we eat, but how sustainable it is. The organisation is calling on Welsh beef farmers to do more to cut their carbon emissions by optimising the health, welfare and breeding capacity of livestock.
