And as the Fisheries Act gets turned into law, we hear concerns that it doesn鈥檛 protect vulnerable fish stocks. Oceana, which represents marine conservation groups worldwide, says the act is a missed opportunity 'to enshrine a legal duty to fish within science-based sustainable limits'. Defra says 'The government is committed to sustainable fishing, as was made clear during passage of the Bill. The UK government will now work with the devolved administrations on legally binding plans for achieving sustainable fish stocks. The Fisheries Act provides us with the powers to restrict the activities of vessels, including supertrawlers, within our waters. Any decision will be considered carefully and based on evidence. Access by all foreign vessels to fish in UK waters is a matter for negotiation'
