Good morning.

Like many others, one of my good friends is has been having a tough time with her relationship this year. 鈥淚 feel like he鈥檚 not even trying!鈥� she tells me down the phone. The pandemic has brought all kinds of uncertainties and worries and has reshaped our personal relationships in unprecedented ways, forcing us to live closer together with some people and further apart from others.

I recommended that my friend and her partner read Gary Chapman鈥檚 famous 鈥淭he 5 Love Languages鈥� 鈥� a New York Times best seller for 10 years running - to see if they could understand how they could learn to love each other in the way they each most wants to receive it.

The five languages include words of affirmation 鈥� this is for people that value verbal acknowledgments of affection, including frequent "I love you's," compliments, words of appreciation, and verbal encouragement. The second is quality time 鈥� this may seem difficult during lockdown restrictions but perhaps we can be creative and remember its quality over quantity. The third is acts of service 鈥� this could be loading the dishwasher, making breakfast, doing the laundry! Actions speak louder than words. Some people like gifts 鈥� visual symbols of love. And finally, physical touch. I know I need a cuddle to keep me going from time to time!

We all have a hierarchy of which of the five is personally more important because even love can sometimes get lost in translation when we鈥檙e all speaking different love languages. So, let us try to learn and listen.

Dear God, during these tough times, help us have patience and have faith, and try and take the time to listen to how your loved ones wish to be loved.
