Script:

Good morning. This weekend Jews celebrate their New Year - Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the civil year. It is also the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve which is described in the first two chapters of the Hebrew Bible. And, of course, for the last two thousand years, these stories have become part of the Christian heritage as well.
I speak as a Christian, not a Jew, but I think that the idea of marking the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve is a wonderful one. Whether you read the creation stories literally or metaphorically, there is no doubt that the author or authors of the Genesis stories wanted to emphasise the supreme importance of every human life. Both man and woman are made in God’s image and likeness, and God looks at them and says that what he sees is not just good, but very good. But hand in hand with the privilege of being the pinnacle of God’s creation, comes the responsibility. In the same story, God entrusts the whole of creation to the wise stewardship of woman and man.
We don’t always do this well, as the number of discarded face masks polluting our local stream indicate, and so it is perhaps appropriate that Rosh Hashanah is also traditionally a judgement day, a day where good deeds are weighed against bad. It’s a sober reminder that, as Jesus said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.â€
Father God, we thank you for creating us in your image and likeness, and endowing us with the wisdom, intelligence, creativity and skill that we need to nurture our planet and our society. Help us to live up to our high calling as the sons and daughters of the great Creator, and to take our responsibility of caring for this world and its people as you would.Amen.
