Celebrating International Dawn Chorus Day

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

This week on Out of Doors we celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day which falls on Sunday 3rd May.

We hear some of the dawn chorus recorded in Mark and Euan’s gardens in Aberdeenshire.

Once again Euan brings us a mystery bird- are your ears keen enough to identify what it is?

We remember our trip to one of the Orkney Islands, Westray, with a clip of our time at Noup Head with tour guide Karen giving us some of the Orkney names for seabirds.

Listener Graeme Cook joins us down the line to tell us about an intriguing natural phenomenon- nocturnal migration.

Cally Smith from the Huntly and District Swift Group tells Mark and Euan why the swift is such a special bird and how people can help them.

We play a piece of music composed by listener Hilary de Vries inspired by the sparrows in her garden on the Black Isle.

Hamish MacDonald joins us down the line to tell us about his new book 'Wilsons Ornithology & Birds in Scots' and read us some of his poems from the book.

Frank Gardner is best known as the ±«Óãtv’s Security Correspondent but he is also president of the British Trust for Ornithology. He joins us live to chat about his lifelong passion for birds.
