PRAYER FOR THE DAY Tuesday 28 April 2020

Good morning

Ěý

I was shocked when my mother announced that she wanted to join a social network, just 3 days after declaring she would never do such a thing.

Her aim was singular – she wanted to see church services during the lockdown.

Ěý

Now I don’t know if you’ve ever tried teaching technology remotely, when the person you’re speaking to only has one phone available to them, and they’re trying to have a video call with you, at the same time as learning how to operate a new app. It was pure torture for us both.

Ěý

For a couple of days, a speech bubble was known as, “the wee black blob in the corner”, and it took ages to decipher the thing that she said looked like the paw of a dog, but was in fact a graphic of a small group of people.

Ěý

Then came the challenge of finding the things she wanted, without seeing the things she had no interest in. And soon she realised to her horror that other people could find her.

Ěý

But three weeks on, she’s really into the swing of it. She’s attending church services in many different locations, from the comfort of her own living room.

She’s liking, commenting and seeing people’s news.

And last weekend she found some friends of mine, and together they ganged up on me during a live broadcast on social media.

Ěý

The loss of real life interaction is a huge deal. But these days, I am thankful for technological lifelines that limit our sense of isolation and enlarge our world.

Ěý

Thank you Lord for the inventive spirit of those who have developed technology which makes us feel less alone. But we also pray earnestly that it won’t be long, before we can go back to seeing the people we love properly - in person. Amen
