Film reviews, Hollywood director Joachim Ronning, The Monstrous Heart, For Sama

Film reviews, Hollywood director Joachim Ronning on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, plus the film-makers behind the award-winning documentary For Sama.

Film review day and we’ll be discussing this week’s new releases: Terminator: Dark Fate starring Linda Hamilton and, of course, Arnold Swarzenegger; police thriller Black and Blue starring Naomi Harris, and Monos, the foreign language film that just won the Best Film award at the London Film Festival.

Grant talks with Hollywood director Joachim Ronning about new release Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, parenting teenagers and the pressures of managing a blockbuster film budget.

He also talks to the creators behind a new book of photographs of the capital: Edinburgh Revisited.

Serena Field speaks to the filmmakers behind For Sama, a story of a young mother Waad al-Kateab’s life over 5 years in war-battered Aleppo, Syria, filmed by Waad herself, which won the Best Documentary Prize at Cannes and SXSW this year, and which receives its television premiere on Saturday night.

And The Monstrous Heart: director Gareth Nicholls and actor Charlene Boyd join Grant to talk about this new play by Oliver Emmanuel coming to The Traverse in Edinburgh this week. Set in a cabin in the Canadian wilds it features a mother and daughter – and a giant grizzly bear.
