A reflection and prayer to start the day with Rev Dr Lesley Carroll.

O for a thousand tongue to sing
We'll walk by faith
The power of the Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
The Lord is my salvation
In Christ alone

PRAYER FOR THE DAY - SCRIPT 3 AUGUST 2019

Good morning. I love the sunshine, long light nights, warm air and the brightness of summer mornings. There is something about sunshine that lifts my spirits and gets me going, although.when  I was working  through the recent spell of warm weather and that was quite another story!
This year the highest temperature ever was recorded in the UK. It was 38.7 degree centigrade in Cambridge on 25th July. Yet it was on this day in 1990 that the big news was that temperatures in the UK had reached an all-time high. The  temperature of 37.1 degrees centigrade or 99 Fahrenheit, was reached. On that day temperatures were described as ‘sweltering’ so that leaves us more than sweltering just a couple of  weeks ago.
Yet we are completely dependent on the sun for the continuation of life on this planet. The Psalmist wrote:
It rises at one end of the heavens and runs its circuit to the other, nothing is deprived of its warmth.
For those of us in the Christian tradition the faithful rising and setting sun can remind us that God’s faithfulness never fails us, even though we at times question it and wonder about it. Whether we feel the warmth of the sun on our skin or not, it carries on its course. In the same way whether we feel the warmth of God’s love or not, that love is there and will not be deterred.
We pray today for those who have lost sight of the sun, those who doubt God’s faithfulness, those who find life burdensome and challenging and unjust. May they glimpse the sun just enough to know God’s faithful love. Amen.
