Abdullah Afzal and Dr Oscar Duke

Comedian Abdullah Afzal plays the character of Amjad Malik in ±«Óătv One's Citizen Khan. For Father's Day he joins Kate and Jason to talk about the role he has adopted after becoming a father. He says that one of the most challenging aspects about being a Muslim man is trying to keep up a pretence of masculinity. 'Some people in my community saw me as strange because I bottle fed my son and changed his nappy. I feel very uncomfortable and feel judged by people but I don’t let it deter me from being the kind of dad I want to be.'

Joining Abdullah to swap parenting war stories is Dr Oscar Duke. A contributor to The Surgery on Radio 1, Jeremy Vine and ±«Óătv Breakfast he has written a handbook called, ‘How To Be a Dad’ that he says is a ‘papery man hug in what is a potentially treacherous world of terminology, hormones, social change, sleep deprivation and finally dirty nappies with tiny feet attached.’

We catch up with our Charity Champion Karen Penny, who first appeared on Good Morning Sunday in January. Karen is taking four years out to walk around the entire coast of Ireland and mainland UK to raise £100,000 for Alzheimer’s Research. On Sunday, Karen will arrive at her family home for a very brief pit stop having completed the walk around Ireland. Karen tells us how it has gone so far before she sets of for her long walk around the UK.

To mark Father’s Day, Kate and Jason are joined by two young dads who tell them about their approach to being a father in 2019. Muslim, Abdullah Afzal is an actor and comedian who has appeared in Citizen Khan.

After his mum died when he was 15, his sisters stepped in to bring him up. Abdullah loves bottle feeding his son and changing his nappy. But his ‘hands on approach’ to being a dad has been frowned on by older members of his community. He explains why more Muslim men are dumping the traditional parenting roles they grew up and are embracing shared parenting.
