Teenager Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death as he waited for a bus on a London street in a racially motivated attack in 1993. 

Within 24 hours detectives had been given the names of a group of local men suspected of carrying out the brutal and unprovoked killing.

But Stephen’s murder was not properly investigated by the Metropolitan Police amid accusations of racism and corruption within the force.

So in 1997 the new Labour ±«Óătv Secretary Jack Straw ordered an inquiry into Stephen’s death and the subsequent police investigation.

Twenty years ago this weekend the Macpherson report was published. The findings were explosive.

The Metropolitan Police was found to be institutionally racist. Seventy  recommendations were made with the aim of changing the culture in all police forces.

Twenty years on, Stephen Fairclough and guests ask whether that has been achieved.
