Paul Martin is in Surrey with actor and animal rights champion Jenny Seagrove.  Horse- mad since she was a youngster, Jenny has turned her passion into a mission to rescue abandoned ponies and horses. Every day, the RSPCA alone rescues two of these magnificent creatures which are all too often found in heart-breaking and pitiful conditions.  At Jenny’s sanctuary in Surrey, they are given a new lease in life helping sick and vulnerable children.

Margherita Taylor is on the banks of the River Thames. The grand-daddy of our inland waterways, the river was once known as the Big Stink with stretches declared biologically dead. But there has been a remarkable fight back and Margherita discovers some surprises as she finds out what creatures are making their homes in the cleaner waters. And the good news just keeps on coming. The Thames Tideway Project , due to open in 2023, will make the river cleaner still so there could very soon be an abundance of wonderful wildlife right in the middle of our capital.

Jules Hudson’s Labrador Teddy is dressed to take on the heatwave as he and his master discover how to keep our pets safe and sound in the hot weather.  Shutting you dog in a car is a certain death sentence in soaring temperatures but man’s best friend is also at risk of heat stroke on walks.   Blue Cross vet Hannah Wiltshire is on hand with tips and advice. But she wants Jules to understand just how hot Teddy can get, which means a 10 minute work out in his winter clothes... something Jules won’t be in a hurry to repeat.

Many people will remember the storm of environmental protests when a second runway was proposed at Manchester Airport there was a storm of protests. Now, the runway sits at the heart of a nature trail. Sean Fletcher heads to the airport to meet the Environment Team. As part of the conservation effort, they’ve planted 150,000 native trees and the River Bollin is now carried through a tunnel under the runway, complete with cascades and pools for the fish. The water is monitored constantly and Sean helps the team to take a sample. It’s a wild place and it’s hard to believe that there’s a runway just fifty metres away… until a jet takes off!
