First Story

First Story changes lives through writing. We bring talented, professional writers into secondary schools serving low-income communities to work with teachers and students to foster creativity and communication skills. Through our programmes, students build vital social and cognitive skills - literacy, self-esteem and resilience - that underpin their success in school and support their transition to further education and employment.

“First Story is an inspiring initiative. It’s a joyful project that deserves as much support as we can give it†Zadie Smith

Our award-winning writers work intensively week on week with students at each school, encouraging them to draw on their own life experiences as a basis for writing. This gives them the confidence to know that their lives, stories and voices are important.

Harriet, whose story you hear in the appeal

Harriet believed she was useless at writing.  At the end of her year working with First Story, she had won a national writing competition and read her poem before an audience of six hundred young people, including her heroes, the authors Mark Haddon and Philip Pullman.
