Torrey Canyon

Good morning. This time 50 years ago, Captain Rugiati, master of the Torrey Canyon super-tanker, was shaken rudely awake by a member of his crew.  Steaming through the night at full throttle to make its delivery on time, something had gone wrong.  Strong winds and currents had pushed the huge vessel off course, and it was now off the Cornish Coast in amongst the Seven Stones rocks.  For the next two hours he fought to correct the ship’s course, but without success.  The tanker was caught on the jagged Pollard’s Rock, and a number of its storage tanks were ripped open.  Over the next few weeks some 31 million gallons of oil would spill from the ship, and the environmental damage both from the oil and the dispersants used to clear it, was incalculable.
Of course, lessons were learnt, both about the design and operation of such vessels, and about the way in which we clear up oil spills.  Sadly, though, it was not the last such event.  Ships have run aground, oil wells in the seabed have spewed unchecked into the ocean and the damage goes on.  As long as we want to fuel our cars, power our homes or manufacture half the goods which fill them, it is a risk we run.  When I read this story I was struck by how little thought I give to any of those around the world who transport the goods I consume around the world.
Will you join me today in praying for those who spend their lives at sea to deliver the goods which we consume every day?
Dear God, we pray today for those who spend their lives on the busy shipping lanes of the world.  Keep them from harm, and watch over them and the loved ones they leave behind we pray. Amen
