Jazzahead! French Focus
The second part of Jazz on 3's coverage of the 2015 Jazzahead! festival in Bremen, focusing on French highlights including Henri Texier and Donkey Monkey.
Jez Nelson revisits Jazzahead! 2015 - an annual music festival and industry expo held in Bremen, Germany - this time with a focus on French bands, who provided many of the highlights.
Music comes from saxophonist Thomas De Pourquery and his group, Supersonic, who pay tribute to Sun Ra, with high-octane interpretations of some of the afrofuturist jazz maverick's best-loved tunes. Quirky, piano and drums duo Donkey Monkey blur the lines between jazz and punk, and young quintet Papanosh mix free improv with trad jazz, klezmer and sounds from the Balkans.
Veteran double bassist Henri Texier and his trio take us further afield, with lyrical compositions that whisper of the Middle East, while our guest Alex Dutilh, of Radio France, shares insights into the French jazz scene.
