The Northern Ireland Military Wives Choir was formed in 2012 to bring ladies from within the military communities closer together through music and singing.Ìý Since then, the choir has grown steadily.Ìý But, as is inevitable, they have had to say goodbye to some old friends who have moved on, and welcome new members whose families have been posted here, or singers who have a military connection.

Over the past two and a half years they have sung at some very high profile events and in some of our finest buildings.Ìý But whist they love the big occasions, for the girls in the choir, some of their most enjoyable performances have been at the Somme Nursing ±«Óãtv where they recently sang wartime tunes with the residents and their families.Ìý

Performing is only part of what the choir is about.Ìý It is also about the friendships and companionship, coming together to share the common understanding of what it is like to be a military wife, the highs, the lows, the frustrations and, at times, the loneliness.

They are proud to be Military Wives and this support is echoed in their theme song ‘Stronger Together’.

The recent Ulster Hall concert in aid of the Integrated Education Fund , hosted by the Donaghadee Male Voice Choir with guests, The Barnburgh Village Singers, The Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir, members of the choirs of St Malachy’s, Belfast and Hazelwood Integrated School (and special guest Andrea Begley)

Donaghadee Male Voice Choir (conductor Robert Wilson MBE) was formed over 80 years ago and can truly claim to be one of our international choirs having travelled, competed (successfully) and sung in the USA, Bulgaria, Canada, Italy, Malta, Greece, Poland, and later this year in Spain and France.

The Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir (conductor Tony Jermy) is from a small mining village in South Yorkshire.Ìý This is their 90th anniversary year and the choir was originally comprised mainly of miners.Ìý One of their many achievements is that they are one of the only choirs ever to score a perfect 100 and have had great success at the Welsh International Eisteddfod.

The Barnburgh Village Singers (conductor Julia Bullars) is a Ladies Choir who are also from a small mining village in South Yorkshire.Ìý Julia’s late husband had conducted a male voice choir and Julia was the pianist.Ìý After he passed on, Julia felt the need for music and so formed her own choir in 2002, but this time it was for the ladies of the village.Ìý And from small informal beginnings in Julia’s house, the choir grew and grew into the impressive membership that it has now.
