Debbie Harry and Chris Stein

Forty years ago in New York, a young photographer called Chris Stein met singer Debbie Harry.  They formed the band and went on to have global success with hits like “Heart of Glass” and “Atomic”.  They also were a couple for fifteen years and continued to work together after their break up in 1989. Chris and Debbie join Jane to discuss the music, their relationship and “Me, Blondie and the Advent of Punk” – an and accompanying book of Chris’s previously unpublished photos that celebrate the New York punk scene.

How to Talk About Poor Performance

Last week the fleet street legend Felicity Green said the best piece of advice she’s every received was how to tell a man off. Apparently the key is to “let him leave with his balls intact.” So how do you have that difficult conversation? How easy is it to cross the line and humiliate your employee? The Organisational Psychologist Mary Sherry and the businesswoman and former Dragon Hilary Devey join Jane to discuss.

Criminalising Paying for Sex

A group of cross party MPs have launched a bid to reform Britain’s prostitution laws. Today an amendment to the Modern Slavery Bill, making it a crime to pay for sex, will be debated in the House of Commons. Opposers of this move to adopt what is known as the ‘Nordic model’ say it won’t stop prostitution, but will make it more dangerous for those involved.  Ahead of a vote on this proposition MP Fiona MacTaggart and Dr Belinda Brooks-Gordon discuss the effects of this possible change for those working in the sex industry.

Brazilian Elections and Dilma Rousseff

Last week Brazil elected Dilma Rousseff for her second term by an extremely narrow margin. Dilma Rousseff, of the Workers’ Party (known as PT), is a 62 year old grandmother, former guerrilla leader and political prisoner. Three years on from her original election we look at what she’s achieved and why opinions are so divided on her. Jane talks to ±«Óătv Brasil producer, Camilla Costa, about what challenges lie ahead for one of the world’s most powerful women.

Tackling the Gender Pay Gap

The Fawcett Society says that as of November 4th, if you’re a woman and you go out to work, you’re working for nothing until the end of the year. It’s more than 40 years since the Equal Pay Act and women’s earnings continue to be significantly lower than men’s. What’s the reason this inequality persists and what should be done about it? Jane talks to Dr Eva Neitzert, Deputy CEO of the Fawcett Society about the report she has written and to Nicky Morgan, the Minister for Women and Equalities about what the government is doing to tackle equal pay.
