Janis Winehouse

“She was a singer, a superstar, an addict, but to me - her mother - she is simply Amy.” Amy Winehouse died tragically young in 2011, aged just 27, but whilst the world lost a gifted singer and songwriter, with millions of record sales to her name, her mother Janis lost a much loved daughter. Janis was there for Amy throughout her life – a life not just of music, but of often difficult behaviour, addictions to drink and drugs, papparazi pictures and tabloid headlines - and all whilst struggling with her own challenges – a failing marriage, working and studying, and worsening multiple sclerosis. Since dealing with her daughter’s sad, untimely passing she’s set up the to help young people and their families cope with addiction, and now she’s written a new memoir, Loving Amy. ÌęIn the run up to what would have been Amy’s 31st birthday on Sunday, Janis Winehouse talks to Jenni Murray about the realities she faced as mother to Amy, with her addiction to drink and drugs.
