The Peckham Experiment

In 1935 two doctors, Innes Pearse and her husband George Scott Williamson, opened the Pioneer Health Centre in Peckham, South London. Their aim was to conduct a huge experiment into the effect of environment on health. They concentrated on a preventative, rather than a curative, approach, and their work became known as ‘The Peckham Experiment,’ with 950 families paying one shilling a week to take part. The historian Juliet Gardiner talks about the legacy of Dr Innes Pearse and how her pioneering approach to health still has resonance today.
