The Pistorius Trial

The judge is a woman with a reputation forĚýgiving hard sentences (especially to the perpetrators of domestic violence) and, outside the court, the ANC’s Women’s League is holding placards saying “No violence against women”. Although the issue of domestic violence does not featured in the Pistorius trial, the trial is, nevertheless, provoking the country’s women’s groups and the international media to highlight the fact that South Africa has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the world. Nomsa Maseko, the ±«Óătv’s Southern Africa correspondent, joins Jenni to discuss the part that women are playing in the trial of Oscar Pistorius

Life in the Lords: the Young Baronesses

Last week Jenni met three of the oldest and longest serving Baronesses currently sitting in the House of Lords: Baroness Sharples (91), Baroness Warnock (89) and Baroness Rendell (84). The average age in The Lords is currently 70 – which is significantly older than some of the youngest peers who are in their early forties. So what is it like to sit on the benches of the Upper House with people who are more than twice your age, in an institution so steeped in history and tradition? This week Jenni speaks to three of the youngest Baronesses – Baroness Worthington (42), Baroness Berridge (41) and Baroness Parminter (49).

New study explains how dense breast tissue drives the early stages of cancer

We have known for many years that women with high density breast tissue have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. But we have never known why. Now, researchers at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Unit at Manchester University have discovered the biological mechanisms responsible for tumour growth in dense breast tissue and it’s a breakthrough that could improve breast cancer prevention techniques. Professor Michael Lisanti, Director of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Unit at the University of Manchester joins Jenni to discuss this new research and how it could benefit millions of women.
