This has been a big week for Tessa Ross.  On Sunday she won this year’s BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and yesterday was named as one of the top 100 Powerful Women in the UK on the Woman’s Hour Power List.  As the Controller of Film and Drama at Channel 4 she has been part of the team which brought films as diverse as Slumdog Millionaire and the Last King of Scotland to our screens as well as TV hits such as Shameless and White Teeth.  Described by Danny Boyle as a ‘shy genius’, Tessa joins Jenni Murray to talk films, TV, power and creativity.

Are your children at home on half term, or currently at school, talking incomprehensibly?  Last week a Head Teacher primary school in Middlesbrough banned slang arguing that children’s job prospects in later life would be would be improved if they spoke 'standard English'.  But is what some think of lazy street slang more complex than we may think?  Sue Elliott Nicholls went to Haggerston School in Hackney to meet Debbie, Iqumat, Aisha, Eliana and Whitney and find out what those words really mean.

June Haimoff settled in Turkey in the 1980s after launching a successful campaign to conserve the loggerhead sea turtle. She was awarded an MBE for her services to environmental conservation and two years ago set up thein Dalyan. Now ninety years old she talks to Jenni about her campaign work.  

The story of seven schoolgirls in an impoverished part of Glasgow – 4 asylum seekers, and 3 from Scotland - who decided to campaign against the deportation of asylum seekers, dawn raids, and child detention, after one of them was taken in a raid. Jenni talks to two of the group, Amal Azzudin and Emma Clifford, who call themselves the Glasgow Girls. They describe taking on the government, the personal impact of immigration policy, their cross cultural friendships, and seeing their story now turned into a hit stage musical. 

The musical was conceived and directed by Cora Bissett for the National Theatre of Scotland and opens this week at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East in London.
