Is it acceptable to use monkeys and other primates for medical research?

A Scottish MEP has called for a proposed ban on primate testing to be extended to include monkeys used in Scottish laboratories. Labour MEP David Martin said Scotland runs proportionately more tests on primates than any country in the EU.

But scientists argue such experiments are vital to developing cures from everything from infertility to cancer.

Is testing on mokeys immoral and should we find alternatives? Or, given that they're our closest cousins, are they sometimes the only option for research into vital cures for diseases like cancer?
