Mortgages and rents are increasing, fuel prices and food bills are going up and the official figures tell us inflation is running at over three percent. Those are the kinds of pressures which make us all look at our pay packets and, inevitably, workers start demanding pay increases in line with inflation. However, the Chancellor Alistair Darling says pay rises need to be "consistent" with the 2 per cent inflation target. Is he right?
