Vernon Kay at the 2008 Big Weekend

For listeners tuning in there will also be exclusive Live Lounge sessions broadcast from backstage.

A truly multi-platform experience, the two-day event will be broadcast on Radio 1, with a major interactive presence online at bbc.co.uk/radio1 and many live performances available to watch on demand.

There will be highlights on ±«Óãtv Three and extended performances can be seen via the Red Button on digital TV during the weekend.

Registration for tickets opens at 8.15am tomorrow (Wednesday 15 April), and runs until 10.00am on Monday 20 April at bbc.co.uk/radio1.

There are 40,000 tickets available across the weekend – tickets are free, but last year over half a million people applied for them and demand is expected to be massive again this year.

Each lucky applicant will receive a pair of tickets for either Saturday or Sunday. The event goes to a different area in the UK each year and Radio 1 will again ensure a degree of preference is given to local residents.

Tickets will be allocated randomly, but weighted in favour of those living in Swindon and the surrounding area, with a smaller amount distributed nationally.

Throughout the weekend, Radio 1 DJs including Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley, Vernon Kay, Scott Mills, Fearne & Reggie, Edith Bowman, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Greg James and Nick Grimshaw will be introducing the bands on stage and broadcasting from the event.

Chris Moyles, who will appear on the Main Stage, says: "Our set on the Main Stage will be to Swindon what Madonna was to Maidstone last year – but better!"

Jason Carter, Editor, Live Music & Events, Radio 1, says: "With four stages packed with the best UK and international talent, along with new and emerging artists, it promises to be a weekend to remember.

"We know that ticket demand will be greater than the tickets we have available so if you are successful you are one of the lucky ones.

"But for those that can't get to the event you won't have to miss a thing as it will be on Radio 1, ±«Óãtv Three, online and via the red button."

Phil Young, Councillor, Swindon Borough Council, adds: "What a great line-up and there is no doubt that this is the biggest thing to happen in Swindon for years. I am very proud to be hosting such a high profile event and we all now have the chance to show the world what a great place Swindon is."
