±«Óãtv Two announces new landmark series as Dr Alice Roberts traces epic journey of early humans from Africa

Dr Alice Roberts (Coast, Don't Die Young), travels to the ends of the earth to trace the extraordinary beginnings of the human story in The Human Journey, a landmark series for ±«Óãtv Two.

Ìý

Using the latest genetic, climate and archaeological evidence, she will discover the five epic routes our ancestors took across the globe, and the obstacles and brutal challenges they encountered along the way.

Ìý

She will discover where we came from, how our ancestors colonised the world, and how their journeys changed us.

Ìý

Today's global population is extraordinarily diverse; yet we all share one thing in common: DNA that tells us one astonishing message – we are all closely related.

Ìý

In this series Alice Roberts will show how most of us descend from a tiny group of men and women who left Africa in a perilous crossing – and then went on to colonise the rest of the world.

Ìý

She will explain how all Europeans living today are descended from just a handful of women, why different ethnic groups look the way they do, what makes some of us able to tolerate milk and alcohol, and why others are great at conserving heat.

Ìý

Alice Roberts will interrogate the evidence to address mysteries including how our ancestors reached Australia without boats and what happened when they came face-to-face with other human species like Homo erectus.

Ìý

She will also explore how they overcame extraordinary challenges – from supervolcanoes to climatic disaster – to become the people we are today.

Ìý

Paul Bradshaw, whose credits include Egypt and Medieval Lives, is Series Producer of Human Journey and Executive Producer is Kim Shillinglaw (Child Against All Odds, Crisis At Jimmy's Farm, Truth About You, Escape From Scorpion Island).

Ìý

The 5x60-minute series has been commissioned by Roly Keating, Controller, ±«Óãtv Two, Emma Swain, Head of In-House Knowledge Commissioning, and Martin Davidson, Commissioning Editor, Specialist Factual, In-House,

Ìý

It is being filmed in HD and will be delivered in early 2009.

Ìý

Kim Shillinglaw said: "This landmark series will see Dr Alice Roberts re-tracing the most epic adventures that humans ever experienced.

Ìý

"As each journey develops, it will follow a trail of clues, driven by the very latest scientific research, including the recent archaeological finds and new research into genetics and climate history.

Ìý

"And, by the end of the series, we'll have trodden in the footsteps of our ancestors through 160,000 years of history."
