Ann Widdecombe MP and Jude Kelly to take part in Radio 4's Lent Talks 2008

This year's Lent Talks on ±«Óãtv Radio 4 see six well-known figures reflect on the story of Jesus' ministry and Passion from the perspective of their own personal and professional experience.

Ìý

The Lent Talks will be broadcast every Wednesday for six weeks from 13 February at 8.45pm.

Ìý

  • The Director of the Southbank Centre, Jude Kelly, argues that the famous and powerful should be required to spend 40 days wrestling with doubts in the wilderness;

  • Professor Terry Eagleton questions the notion that Jesus' story is one of self-denial and argues that self-fulfilment lies at the heart of the Gospel message;

  • writer Mary Loudon challenges society's attitudes to mental illness in her appreciation of Jesus' dealings with the demon-possessed and outcast;

  • human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith draws on his experience of representing prisoners on Death Row to reflect on the story of Jesus;

  • Ann Widdecombe MP meditates on the psychological agony of Jesus on the cross in witnessing the suffering of those who had loved and trusted and hoped in him;

  • the Bishop of Durham, Tom Wright, reflects on the interval between Jesus' death and resurrection and the Christian experience of waiting in hope.

Ìý

Michael Wakelin, Head Of ±«Óãtv Religion and Ethics, says: "Once again we have an exceptionally strong line-up of speakers for our Lent series, providing a fresh, modern perspective on the familiar gospel story."
