"Radio 4 is in terrific shape and my challenge is to cherish it, sustain it and make sure it remains the home for intelligence, flair and wit.

"±«Óãtv 7 has already made a name for itself and I hope to see it become a must for those who value the ±«Óãtv's storehouse of drama and comedy."

Jenny Abramsky, Director of Radio & Music, says: "Mark is a passionate listener and supporter of Radio 4.

As a previous Head of Current Affairs, he has also been responsible for File On 4, From Our Own Correspondent and a whole range of Radio 4 documentaries and short series.

He took on the extra duties as Assistant Director, ±«Óãtv News in 1999 and became Deputy Director in 2001.

Mark was born in 1955 and educated at Cambridge where he gained a Double Starred First in History.

He was awarded the Harkness Fellowship to Harvard University.

He is a Board Member of the Institute of Contemporary British History and the Carl Rosa Opera.
