A festival staged on a country estate in Powys has scooped a top music prize in London.

The Green Man Festival, held at the Glan Usk Estate in Crickhowell, won the best medium-sized event at the UK Festival Awards.

Previous headliners have included ex-Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant, the Super Furry Animals, Badly Drawn Boy and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.

Bestival, which is held on the Isle of Wight, picked up best major festival.

Founded in 2003, Green Man has become one of the most popular alternative festivals. This year's event in August attracted around 10,000 people.

James Drury, managing director of UK Festival Awards Limited, said: "This year's awards were the most hotly-contested we've had, with more than half a million votes, demonstrating just how important festivals are to the UK public.

"Despite the continued challenges of the economy it's been an incredible year for festivals and the awards is all about celebrating that.

"The winners should be rightly proud of their achievements, as should the rest of the industry."
