25,000 bottles of red wine seized by customs in Newport

More than 25,000 bottles of red wine have been seized by customs in Newport in a crackdown on alcohol smuggling.

The haul at a container storage site in the docks area also included 67,000 cigarettes and 92kg of tobacco.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said the haul, including 25,175 bottles of Corte Dorata, evaded duty worth around ÂŁ90,000.

A van, tractor unit and trailer were also seized in the raid but no-one has been arrested.

Keith Morgan, of the customs' criminal investigation branch, said: "Smugglers care little for the quality of the product they sell, and they have no qualms about selling to children.

"I would urge anyone offered alcohol, tobacco or cigarettes at knock-down prices to steer clear - buying these items has far reaching effects way beyond a cheap smoke or drink."

HMRC said the seized goods had been moved to a secure location.

Anyone with information about tobacco smuggling can call the customs' hotline on 0800 595000.
