A lifeline for Gaza

Atheer Gaza (Gaza on Air), a ±«Óãtv Media Action radio programme, provided people in Gaza with daily information and a platform for their voices to be heard, enabling them to take concrete actions to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the Summer 2014 conflict.

In Gaza right now there is a critical humanitarian need, not just for things as basic as food and water but people also need to know how and when to get help.
— Walid Batrawi, Director of Projects, ±«Óãtv Media Action in Ramallah

The radio programme:

  • Gave practical advice and information to people affected by conflict
  • Aired on three different stations at times of highest listenership, providing coverage for the majority of the 1.8 million people living in Gaza
  • Featured expert advice and real stories of affected communities from across the territory

Produced and broadcast in partnership with ±«Óãtv Arabic and the local radio station Alwan FM, 48 episodes of Atheer Gaza containing more than 100 audio packages were aired daily between Sunday and Thursday during the three months immediately following the conflict.

They offered practical advice on a different topic each day - from water sanitation and hygiene to psychological trauma, and caring for children, the elderly and disabled. One episode discussing children’s education outlined steps for setting up community-run schooling in areas where school buildings had been destroyed.

Presenter Dima Hamdan, the voice of Atheer Gaza, introduced stories and packages from journalists in Gaza, interviewed experts and relayed testimonies, comments and questions from the audience.

People need to know how and where to get help

Walid Batrawi, Director of Projects, ±«Óãtv Media Action in Ramallah, said “In Gaza right now there is a critical humanitarian need, not just for things as basic as food and water but people also need to know how and when to get help. That’s where our radio programmes are invaluable as they offer impartial, practical and helpful information to help people survive and get support in devastating times.â€

UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency), international aid agencies, Palestinian government officials and non-governmental organisations based in Gaza contributed to provide ±«Óãtv Media Action with life-saving content for the production of the radio programmes which were then shared with aid agencies who could play them to people without access to radio.

Radio is widely available across Gaza. Atheer Gaza was aired on three different stations at times of highest listenership, providing coverage for the majority of the 1.8 million people living there. Additional engagement opportunities were provided through social media with the show achieving over 12,000 likes on  and 40,000 listens on .

Atheer Gaza was part of ±«Óãtv Media Action’s ongoing  programming around the world in the aftermath of disasters or during times of displacement and conflict. The initiative has provided broadcasts at refugee camps in Darfur in Sudan, to those affected by floods and cyclones in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh and provided humanitarian information to Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon and to the people affected during the Ebola outbreak across West Africa.
