Generation Breakthrough: Using radio to encourage healthy relationships in Bangladesh

The Generation Breakthrough project aims to engage a youth audience with a range of social and health related topics through a weekly radio show radio Dosh Unisher Mor (Crossroads at 10 to 19).

The 100-episode series, which airs on Radio Today 89.6FM, Bangladesh’s most popular commercial radio station, targets 10 to 19 years olds who often have limited opportunities to access information about their sexual and reproductive rights, sexual diversity, gender equality and preventing violence against women and girls.

These barriers to information can lead to unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Limited understanding of health issues and rights can also lead to unsafe abortions, perpetuate child marriage and cause preventable maternal mortality.

As well as using radio, the project uses street drama, board games and online interactivity to engage, educate and entertain the target audience.

The project has been made possible through a partnership with Plan Bangladesh, with funds from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) and the United Nations Population Fund.
