Down2Earth Somalia

We supported local journalists to produce content on weather and climate issues - including water scarcity and food insecurity.

±«Óãtv Media Action is a consortium member of Down2Earth - a project which aims to support people to use climate information to make decisions around social adaptation, policy development and resilience to water scarcity in the Horn of Africa Drylands.

In Kenya our role was to enhance future preparedness and social resilience to climatic shocks through and media communication. We trained local radio stations in the drylands to improve skills producing relevant and accurate, culturally sensitive local media content - with a focus on water scarcity, food insecurity, and climatic adaptation for rural communities.

With additional funding we expanded our work into Somalia. We translated our online course on climate change reporting into Somali and supported the first cohort of local Somali journalists to complete the course with online mentoring. The freely available course has now been taken by hundreds of Somali journalists and in 2023 we held a competition for climate change reporting – open to journalists across all media in Somalia.
